Quick Introduction to Tigrinya
Tigrinya is a Semitic language. Semitic languages belong to a language family that includes modern languages such as Tigre, Amharic, Hebrew, Arabic, etc. The distribution of these languages is shown on the map of northeastern Africa and west Asia (below). It’s also worth noting that it’s a branch of the Afroasiatic language family, the distribution of which is also shown below.
Tigrinya is written in the Ge'ez script. The alphabet deriving from Ge’ez is more commonly referred to as fidelat (ፊደላት) in Tigrinya. A letter is called fidel (ፊደል). Although Ge'ez seems daunting at the beginning, it's fairly easy to learn. What makes it easy is that "you write as you read it and you read as you write it".
