WHAT IS TIGRINYA?
Tigrinya is a Semitic language. Semitic languages belong to a language family that includes modern languages such as Tigre, Amharic, Hebrew, Arabic, etc. It’s also a branch of the Afroasiatic language family. It's primarily spoken in Eritrea and some regions of Ethiopia. The oldest written text of Tigrinya date back to year 1200! It's written in the Ge'ez script. The oldest incription of Ge'ez dates back the 3rd century! Although Ge'ez is no longer spoken, it is still used in the Orthodox church. The alphabet deriving from Ge’ez is more commonly referred to as fidelat (ፊደላት) in Tigrinya. A letter is called fidel (ፊደል). Although Ge'ez seems daunting at the beginning, it's fairly easy to learn. What makes it easy is that "you write as you read it and you read as you write it".
